Being a Sinjoor (i.e. born in Antwerpen (Antwerp, Belgium)), here are the four things I suggest you to do if you have limited time to visit this amazing city.
The easiest way to get to Antwerp is by train and start from the beautiful Central Station. Antwerp’s Central Station is one of the most beautiful train stations in the world. Exit the station on the Astridplein for a view of the facade.
Head towards the jewel in Antwerp’s crown: Our Lady’s Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in the Benelux. Inside you will find colourful stained glass windows and four magnificent works by Peter Paul Rubens, including the famous Raising of the Cross and Descent from the Cross.
Do not miss Antwerp’s town square (Grote Markt) with one of the most iconic buildings: the Stadhuis or City Hall and in front the statue of Brabo. Get the taste of Antwerp: a ‘Bolleke’, an amber coloured beer, at ‘Den Engel’, a café with age-old stories, and for a quick bite of meat balls and fries cross the square to ‘Frituur No.1’.
Stroll down to ‘Het Steen’, a centuries-old fortress which served as an important strategic location, that boasts a stunning view of the River Scheldt.
Enjoy – geniet van jouw bezoek!
